Mbombela - An Mpumalanga pastor has gained popularity after hosting church services at a well-known township tavern.

Prophet Manana is running his weekly services at Queen's Bar & Rest tavern in Kanyamazane near Mbombela.

"God directed me to change this place from what it was to a place to worship the Lord. After opening the church at this tavern I became overwhelmed with the response and support I received from patrons and other community members," said Manana.

Kanyamazane residents have expressed their appreciation to the pastor because of the change they see in their community.

"People need places like this to become better people, unlike many taverns where you find people being confused. Taverns destroy the community's image, but when you see God's ministry arising from it, then all you do is marvel," said Dorcas Magagula (51).

A church member who recently started going there said that she does not care about the reaction from residents who feel church and taverns do not mix.

"Some people have approached me with their negative thoughts about the place, especially old people. I told them that we were sent by God and more churches are needed at these places," said Muhle Nkwanyana (22).
