Bloemfontein – A Mangaung taxi driver was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Free State High Court on Friday for several murders and robberies in and around Bloemfontein in 2009.

Free State Hawks spokesperson Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said Michael Ransutha, 45, was sentenced to life imprisonment.

An accomplice Thabo Mohau Mokone, 20, from Lesotho, was sentenced to 23-years imprisonment.

Mophiring said Ransutha, Mokone and Motshwane Tswete, 26, were behind killings in and around Phases six and nine, near Bloemspruit, during August and October 2009.

Police said that in one incident the men hijacked two vehicles. In two other incidents, they shot dead a driver and a passenger.

Mophiring said Tshwete pleaded guilty, in April, to murder and was sentenced to an effective 25 years' imprisonment. He testified as a state witness against the other two men.
