Johannesburg - A taxi driver who evaded arrest for over a week after a fatal hit-and-run, handed himself to police on Tuesday, Gauteng police said.

The 26-year-old man was allegedly involved in a fatal hit-and-run in Diepsloot Extension four last Monday, Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela said.

He allegedly swerved off the road, crashing into a supermarket's steel door. Two women were trapped between his Toyota Quantum and the door. One of the women died on the scene.

"The other one is still receiving treatment at a local hospital. She is reported to be in a serious condition," said Mavimbela.

"It is said that after the crash, the suspect fled the scene. He drove to the police station, where he left his minibus without reporting the accident. The Toyota Quantum has since been impounded."

The driver would be charged with culpable homicide, driving without a licence, and reckless or negligent driving.

He was expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court soon.
