2012-05-17 14:13

Durban - About 100 minibus taxi drivers staged a protest in Durban on Thursday, complaining that metro police officers were targeting them when issuing traffic fines.

Officers in about 15 metro police cars were monitoring the protest on Bram Fischer and KE Masinga roads in Durban. A Sapa reporter on the scene saw broken glass and people waving knobkerries.

Metro police spokesperson Eugene Msomi could not provide further details.

Big up to metro. Most of this taxi drivers they drive as if they own the road, and as a result of that metro is not suppose to stop them when they violate the rules of the road.

Absolutely and in Dirtbin they are worse than ANYWHERE in the world

Well, that's not my problem! Taxi drivers should be aware of the transport safety, the cops has every right to watch out the people driving properly and following the instructions, if they do not follow, they get fines. Fair is fair, i saw some taxes jumped the red light robots. Follow the instructions, you won't get a chance to pay fines. Safety first!

Should have pulled them all over and check for fines and roadworthy.. Like a free roadblock where everyone comes to you. bargain

apparently the metro cops are doing some of their job. Now tax drivers and your union work with them to provide safer, better transportation and compliance. You will find then less attraction by metro cops, just a thought.

Now this I find interesting, especially amid reports that many taxi companies are owned by police officials. One wonders if the taxi's "targeted" are competitors...

Very pleased to hear that, as the small town we live in, these taxis just pull over when ever they want to offload passenger;s ,irrespective it being where they are only allowed to drop them off, you can be driving behind them and in seconds you have to apply breaks , No its a good idea ......
