2011-01-21 07:50

Pietermaritzburg - A 76-year old jogger was killed when he was hit by a minibus taxi in Pietermaritzburg on Friday, paramedics said.

"A 76-year old man went jogging along Table Mountain road in the Eastwood area of Pietermaritzburg this morning [Friday] at around 05:00 when a taxi hurtled down the road and smashed into the jogger," said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha.

Paramedics arrived at the scene to find the man in a critical condition but he eventually died due to extensive injuries, Botha said.

He said the taxi driver was taken away by police.

He obviously didn't read the papers over the last week. Trucks have been culling the populace. Watch your backs people.

  • kratos - 2011-01-21 08:03

Taxi drivers are a bunch of idiots. They cause 80% of accidents. Ma ses...I hope they lock his ass up.

      DeonL - 2011-01-21 08:15

      I agree.

      Craig - 2011-01-21 08:56

Wow! Keeping fit now days is almost a death trap...jogging, cycling and who knows what else! Agree with you...bunch of idiots that literally get away with murder.

      thuthukag - 2011-01-21 09:10

80%? Where do people get their "facts" from? You're lying! He has been locked up, but don't judge before you know what actually happend. I've almost hit a jogger before. Sometimes, like cyclists, they're a danger unto themselves, but unfortunately law states the "pedestrian" always has right of way. Although a lot of taxi driver's drive like poephols, this, specifically, could happen to any motorist. Runners should also be responsinble and run facing on-coming traffic so as to lower the risk of injury.

      changeisGood - 2011-01-21 09:40

Why do we still have these aliens (taxis and drivers)on our roads, they are the most useless bunch of oxygen thieves ever. Taxi drivers are a law unto themselves in this entire counrty, where is Sbu Ndebele and his croonies..Useless...Every flippen day (literally)I encounter some flippen bad driving from these bastards...we do not need these flippen taxis in SA.

      zoolmadool - 2011-01-21 10:23

@ thuthukag : What are the chances thst the jogger at the age of 76 and already tired , jumped into the traffic or made a sudden dash across the road ? If he could do that what the hell was he jogging for.80% should be a fair number if you count the rate in persons killed and injured & Id guess that without those run over out of their own stupidity. taxis must reign supreme.

      thuthukag - 2011-01-21 11:01

@zoolmadool, I don't know what the chances are. Do you? What were the chances with a seasoned cyclist Carla Swart, or any padestrian for that matter? Were you there? wrt the 80% story,,, This guy says 80% "of accidents" are caused by taxi drivers. I do not defend them in any of my comments, but THAT IS A LIE. You cant thumb-suck a figure like that just because you don't like someone. Answer this, Everytime you've driven passed an accident scene, can you really tell me that 80% of the time a taxi was in the mix 80% of the time? Yes, they are a law unto themselves, yes they are a headache to share roads with, but Kratos's statement, 80%? The article doesnt even say that the runner was scooped up off the pavement, yet... Anyway, see my comment at Sue-Ellen.

  • Al_capone - 2011-01-21 08:05

It is shocking to hear the high percentage of incidents are taxi related. I live in JHB and you can see where the taxis are: These are SOLID observations about my commute: Jumping red light 8/10 cars are taxis. Stopping in dangerous places in road 10/10 Even stopping on Freeways - seriously. Driving without lights after dusk 7/10 are taxis not indicating 7/10 cars are taxis. And who complains the most and wants to petition, march, destroy when there are tollways, AARTO etc ....taxis USe it -don't use it!!

      seriass - 2011-01-21 08:25

agreed and what sucks is this poor guy makes it toa ripe old age and then gets flattened by a parasite in a taxi. not cool. hang the prick - 2011-01-21 09:49

You know, here in Durban on the N2 highway, people wait (on the highway) for the taxi's to fetch them, they simply stop just before a bridge where they pick up people on the highway is like a make shift taxi rank ...ON THE HIGHWAY!!!! I mean come on WTF??? And we want to know why pedestrians are knocked down or accidents are caused is a flipping joke!

  • Aj - 2011-01-21 08:11

And who drives these taxi's. Irresponsible people who most likely never finished school and or lacks moral fiber ? Sounds about right, but the traffic officials remains careless in punishing these offenders.! Crying shame.

      Wimpyburger - 2011-01-21 09:45

@Aj - in addition, people who buy their drivers licenses form a kuka shop for R50. Who think the road only belongs to them, who think the emergency lane is a taxi lane, who think they can skip red traffic lights, other traffic will stop. Apart from that, who most of the times don't & can't think.

  • Jamesons - 2011-01-21 08:17

Our system needs to change with our taxi transport. The system needs to be tuffer on them and come up to standard likee the rest of the world with safety and regulations like in the work place. But this country is run like a sowetan toilet so it wont happen.

      Craig - 2011-01-21 09:08

Hey Dont insult the sowetan toilet like that

  • Natasha KC - 2011-01-21 08:18

Another unthinkable, unnecessary road tragedy. :-(( May the family left behind find someway of moving on and my the unfortunate victim rest in peace.

  • sjackson - 2011-01-21 08:32

take all these taxis off the road now.

  • caraleer - 2011-01-21 08:47

When will this country have zero tolerance on our roads? Just this morning I was crossing the road, just then a taxi overtook another one and came speeding at me hooting for me to get out of the way when he was in the wrong on the wrong side of the road! Taxi drivers are a law unto themselves and it is a disgrace that not even the death toll due to taxis is enough to change the system.

  • caraleer - 2011-01-21 08:50

When will enough deaths occur due to stupid drivers so that there will be zero tolerance on our roads? Just this morning I was crossing the road when a taxi overtook another one and came toward me hooting for me to get out of the way when they were in the wrong on the wrong side of the road! It is a disgrace that taxi drivers get away with this, they are a law unto themselves. It is a great pity that no matter how many deaths they cause, the system does not change.

WHEN OH WHEN IS SOMETHING GOING TO BE DONE TO CULL THE MINIBUS TAXI!? They are a menace to society and clearly none in ANY province have any respect for life

Just another one for the stats.

  • Kale - 2011-01-21 09:04

Perhaps it's time for your ANC government to start enforcing the laws (Perhaps you should look up the word Law first). Your truck, bus (read: over sized taxi) and taxis are the epitome of negligent, reckless driving - how do you expect to make your country better when everyone on the road hates each other? Motorists are not exempt from this but those 3 are the worst offenders.

  • Dan - 2011-01-21 09:11

Sad. Sad, Sad. I hope the ANC structures will also now toi-toi outside the court as they did in the past when the dirver and victom of an accident was of different complection.

      Maryna123 - 2011-01-21 09:47

Ya, when hell freezes over... That is only done when the driver and deceased are the other way around...

      thuthukag - 2011-01-21 10:05

Do you mean like Jub Jub? What are you talking about. How is this a racial issue. Check yourself buddy. What you are inciting is very wrong.

      4daluvofSA - 2011-01-21 10:24

eishh, blame ANC for everything! I am sure even if you have a stomach ache you blame ANC! "oh my worrrd Bradley this ANC is making my stomach turn bruh" I am not pro ANC but c'mon.....

      Lekabisto - 2011-01-21 14:53

Did you really have to bring race into this one?????

  • Sue-Ellen - 2011-01-21 09:20

What a tragic and sad story! I feel that the traffic cops aren't doing their jobs properly.. I am a sales rep and see taxi's driving badly all day in my city, and I hear people of all over the country moan about the same thing. Let's face it, taxi's get away with driving neglegenty! During the world cup in 2010, when their was more law enforcement around my city, it was evident that taxi's appeared to be abiding the law. I would like to see stricter law enforcement around to avoid accidents like this happening so often. The traffic cops are in a position to enforce the law. Consistant strict law enforcement with consequences will force more drivers to drive carefully. To the traffic cops out there, please rule with an iron fist (as do the "traffic cops" in other parts of the world where less road accidents take place).

      thuthukag - 2011-01-21 10:17

Finally, a practical comment. So true Sue. but your proposed stricter enforcement measures should be applied on the broader spectrum as well. Although people like kratos will have you believe that incidents involving taxi's account for 80% of all road incidents, I'm sure you would concur that this is far from accurate. Impatient, drunk, inconsiderate and always late bully motorists, in my view, are the bigger culprits, and are responsible for the larger number of incidents. Whenever there is congestion as the result of an accident, MOST of them have been normal cars when I drive passed the scene. I dont condone taxi mentality, but I do believe drivers in general have become a problem, and the traffic police need to address this. Good comment my sister.

      zoolmadool - 2011-01-21 10:57

@ NEWS24 Can you please explain how come you write delete under every comment I that I make

  • Melly30 - 2011-01-21 09:59

Please can someone REMOVE these pests off our roads... There will be less accidents and people hurt!!

  • Soothsayer - 2011-01-21 10:01

Taxi drivers are generally bad drivers. However, we cannot conclude that the driver was at fault on the death of this jogger. It reminds me of Carla Swart who was knocked by a truck. " She lost her cycling computer and, in an effort to retrieve it, turned around directly in front of an oncoming vehicle.May be the jogger lost her IPod and tried to retrieve it, may the jogger fell in front of the minibus taxi.

  • Chibuli - 2011-01-21 10:33

We need a decent public transport system which negates the requirement for these so-called "minibus taxis", which should then be either outlawed or STRICTLY regulated - i.e. one offence and both the operating and drivers licences get cancelled permanently, and the vehicle confiscated. Zero tolerance - or are people's lives not important? ANC, your call!

  • goyougoodthing - 2011-01-21 11:15

Can we please please get rid of this taxi industry? That is the place to nationalise, not the mines. These guys are complete waynekerrs when it comes to the road.

  • Wonderboy - 2011-01-21 13:12

Should taxi drivers not have a special drivers training? They should receive advanced driving training or something like that before being able to transport people. To be a taxi driver one should actually be better qualified than the norm to be able to get the insurance for a taxi or does that not come into the equation at all?

      Lekabisto - 2011-01-21 14:57

They dont need any sort of training, since they make their own rules on the road, they flipping piss me off!!!

  • Grant - 2011-10-24 07:47

death penalty for this driver too. taxis dont own the road, and he should be dealt with.. this is man slaughter...............
