Pretoria - A Gauteng primary school teacher will be provisionally
suspended after it came to light that he let young girls sit on his lap during
class.
One of his pupils wrote about this in a letter and her
father then raised the alarm, reported Beeld.
The school is on the East Rand and the teacher of Grade 5,
Grade 6 and Grade 7 pupils had allegedly been doing this for some time.
In the letter, the little girl named the girls who were
“allowed to sit on the teacher’s lap while the other children had to go on with
schoolwork”.
Charles Phahlane of the Gauteng education department said on
Monday that the teacher would be provisionally suspended until a disciplinary
hearing had been held.
The parent of the little girl who wrote the letter said
although his daughter was not a “victim”, she was getting therapy.
After seeing his daughter’s letter he refused to let her be
taught by the teacher.
Meanwhile, the education department said last week that 289
cases of sexual abuse perpetrated by teachers had been reported between 2009
and 2012.
Of these cases, 227 concerned teachers who had been axed,
warned or scrapped from the register.
