A PIETERMARITZBURG family are preparing for the funeral of their beloved mother, a teacher who was stabbed to death in Mooi River last week.

Pretty Gangada (51), who was as a teacher at the Dabulamanzi Combined School in Mooi River, was getting ready to see her children in Pietermaritzburg when she was attacked.

According to school headmaster Msizeni Ngubane, Gangada was leaving the teachers’ cottages on the school’s premises when she was pounced upon. Her attacker stabbed her in the stomach and in the neck.

A 20 cm knife was lodged in her neck when her body was discovered on Sunday.

“I got a call after 11 am on Sunday saying I must come to the school urgently. When I got there I could not believe what I saw,” Ngubane said.

Gangada was robbed of her cellphone and her car, which was recovered on Monday near Nottingham Road.

Ngubane said there are no security guards stationed at the school.

“We are still so shocked. We have never seen anything like this before, for a woman to be killed this way is horrific,” Ngubane said.

Gangada, who was from Edendale and lived in a cottage at the school, taught Zulu and life orientation to matric pupils at the school.

She is survived by three children, two boys and a girl.

“This is a big loss for the school. She was a very good teacher and a friendly lady. She was good to her pupils and they really miss her,” Ngubane said.

Speaking to The Witness yesterday, Gangada’s daughter Thembeka, said her funeral will take place tomorrow.

“She was vibrant and pro-active. She loved listening to house music and gospel when she was out with friends,” Thembeka said.

“They stabbed her when she was due to come back home. We only see her once or twice a month, now we will never see her again. We are devastated and we really miss her.”

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the motive for the killing is unknown at this stage.

“A case of murder was opened at Mooi River police station for investigation and no arrests have been made,” Naicker said
