Teachers, pupils urged to have HIV tests

Pretoria - All teachers and pupils have been urged to participate in the roll-out of voluntary HIV testing in schools, Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane said on Thursday.

"Cabinet welcomed and supported the initiative by the departments of health and basic education... and we urge all teachers and learners to participate in the campaign," Chabane said during a media briefing in Pretoria.

The initiative was part of a campaign to ensure all South Africans knew their HIV status and received treatment if necessary.

A task team had been set up to provide support to schools involved.

"Parents must be assured that care will be taken to ensure that the testing is done in a professional and responsible manner," said Chabane.

Well now - guess this is required since so many teens fall pregnant with a teacher as father! - 2011-02-03 13:52

Make it mandatory when you go for your ID too - everyone should know their status.

You need to be aids-free in order to participate in toy-toying!!

Well it's one test they won't have to study for.... Kids imitate adults & if adults are setting a poor example then kids are sure to follow..Now we have babies making babies which is RAPE but, hey our answer is Abortion Clinics.. - 2011-02-03 14:37

It never ceases to amaze me. Last year a law was passed making it illegal for children under the age of 16 (or somewhere around that age group) to kiss in public. Now we want them all to have HIV tests!! Dont get me wrong I think it is a good idea for those that engage in Sex to have these tests. However, it all seems a bit barmey!

I really hope for the kids' sake that they offer the appropriate counselling!!

How much does an AIDS test cost?

  • Macho Mike - 2011-02-03 18:34

Eish, this is one test you do not pass by obtaining 30%. Simple, it's a pass or fail. Given the recent HIV stats, where 16.7% of the world's population who are infected with HIV live in SA, which has only 0.7% of the World's total population, we can expect many failures. From the Pink Floyd classic, " Hey teacher, leave them kids alone"......
