Teen arrested for kidnapping baby

Johannesburg - A 15-year-old girl has been arrested for kidnapping a 3-week-old baby in Oudtshoorn, in the Western Cape, police said on Tuesday.

Captain Malcolm Pojie said the baby was found in Ladismith with the teenager on Tuesday, by police acting on a tip-off.

The teen was arrested. She may not be named, and would appear in the Oudtshoorn Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on a charge of kidnapping.

The baby's mother left the child outside a supermarket with her 14-year-old nephew when she went to withdraw money from the bank.

The girl apparently gave the 14-year-old R10 and asked him to buy her a memory stick. She took the baby while he was gone.

"The baby is reported to be in good health and will be taken for a medical examination soon," said Pojie.

He said the department of social development would be investigating the child's mother and assessing their living arrangements.

"The child will temporarily be in a place of care and the outcomes of the social development consultation will determine whether or not the child is returned to the mother."

The arrested teen will make an excellent mother. Her transgression was the result of an extreme urge to motherhood. Live and evolution can be a biatch. But somehow everything balances out.

Have you completely lost your mind? Most 15 year olds are not mentally or emotionally mature enough to make informed decisions for themselves. Case and point, KIDNAPPING SOMEONE ELSES CHILD! A 15 year old is still a child and cannot be expect to raise a child!

@ Libratwin Have you lost your mind? You fail to appreciate the comment.

I would love to know the reason why this girl kidnapped this baby. What was she thinking? That maybe she could sell it? What else would a 15 year old want to do with a kidnapped baby??? I am really curious to know! I am very happy the baby was found and hope he will be returned shortly.

Why is the mother being investigated? She left the baby with a 14-year-old, who should have known better. My 13-year-old nephew would not hand over my grandchild to a stranger.
