Volksrust - A 17-year-old girl appeared in Volksrust Magistrate's Court on Thursday on a charge of kidnapping a two-month-old baby boy, said Mpumalanga police.
Superintendent Abie Khoabane said the case was postponed to July 14 and the teenager was remanded.
She had allegedly gone to the mother of the baby boy in Volksrust on Sunday and convinced the mother that she was fetching the baby for a visit to his father.
The mother believed this and packed extra clothes and milk for the child.
By 17:00 on Sunday, the mother became worried and phoned the father. He denied any knowledge of arranging a visit by his son.
The woman went to police and opened a case of kidnapping.
Phoned the police
The girl was believed to have caught a taxi to Tsakane township on the East Rand.
When she arrived at her boyfriend's house she tried to convince him that they had had a child together.
The boyfriend was unconvinced and left the woman and the child in his house.
He phoned the Volksrust police and asked if a case of kidnapping had been opened. When police confirmed that a case had been opened, he directed police to his house.
Police arrived at the house and arrested the youth. The baby was found unharmed and was reunited with his mother later on Sunday.
