Teen cyclist dies near Durban

Durban - A teenager died after being hit by a truck while cycling in Camperdown, 50km outside Durban on Sunday, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said the 14-year-old boy was cycling in an event with his mother when he lost his balance and fell off his bicycle.

The truck, which was travelling in the same direction, drove over him.

"Paramedics were called to the scene, but there was nothing we could do, he had sustained massive head injuries," said Banks.

I honestly don't know when cyclists will disengage from cycling on busy roads, especially on South African roads. Half the drivers on our roads have bought licences from corrupt traffic officials. The driver of this truck should also have been more alert. I mean as soon as you see someone go down ahead of you your immediate reaction would be to slam on brakes. Not continue driving at the same speed over the person. These cycling accidents are just happening too often. It's actually ridiculous now. Get of the road cyclist!

Where does it state that he didn’t slam on brakes and hit the person at the same speed?

As a cyclist and triathlete I have one answer for you; Up yours, smegma breath !!

Camperdown is not a busy road and is a common cycling area!! Everyone who lives in the area knows that come a weekend the roads are busy with cyclists and it should be common practise to be considerate for cyclists, pedestrians and everyone that shares the road!!

@dvdb27 : You are truly a prick. This is a sad sad article, about many people whose lives are changed, even destroyed in an instant. The boy who lost his life, his mom who watched it happen, the trucki driver (yes, he IS suffering). Have some compassion. How do you even know what the truck driver did to try and avoid driving over the boy? Ugh, people like you make me SICK. My sympathies to all involved, what a sad loss.

When will cars and trucks and buses and people in general realise we all have to share the road. South African drivers are aggressive aholes.

If it was an event why was there that kind of traffic ..... very tragic my condolences to his family, friends and Durban cycle club - I think the need to close roads off for events
