Johannesburg - A sea rescue operation has been launched in Jeffrey's Bay after a 16-year-old boy disappeared into the sea after being swept away by a wave, the National Sea Rescue Institute said on Sunday.

Spokesperson Robin Brown said: "The boy, from Port Elizabeth, disappeared into the water.

"A search operation has so far revealed no sign of the teenager."

He had been part of a church group on the beach who were all wading in the sea when a powerful wave hit them.

The group was able to pull a 16-year-old female, who nearly drowned, out of the water.

The teenage boy disappeared under the water before the group could reach him.

The search will continue on Monday.
