Johannesburg - A Northern Cape police spokesperson, Cherelle Ehlers, said on Friday that a 17-year-old boy had been arrested in Kimberley's central business district for orchestrating his own kidnapping.

Ehlers said he faced a charge of fraud.

The teenager left his Riviera home on Wednesday and the next day his guardian received a text message that he had been kidnapped.

In the SMS, believed to have been sent from the youth's cellphone, the kidnappers demanded a ransom of R1 850 for his return, but he was captured soon afterwards.

Shame, only R1,850... His self-esteem must be a bit low.

The story mentions a guardian and not a parent, so yes, his self-esteem is probably a bit low.

The cops were waiting for him when he went to the ATM to draw the ransom.
