Teen faces charge over his own kidnapping

Johannesburg - A Northern Cape police spokesperson, Cherelle Ehlers, said on Friday that a 17-year-old boy had been arrested in Kimberley's central business district for orchestrating his own kidnapping.

Ehlers said he faced a charge of fraud.

The teenager left his Riviera home on Wednesday and the next day his guardian received a text message that he had been kidnapped.

In the SMS, believed to have been sent from the youth's cellphone, the kidnappers demanded a ransom of R1 850 for his return, but he was captured soon afterwards.
