Durban - A 17-year-old teenager - believed to be a school pupil -- was hacked to death on Friday morning, police said.
Inspector Joey Jeevan said the incident took place at Umlulama High School in the Thornville area, on the outskirts of Pietermaritzburg.
"Police found the body of the teen, lying on the assembly ground," she said.
"He had sustained open wounds to the head and legs and it is believed to have been inflicted with a bush knife," said Jeevan.
A security guard told police that at 02:00, a group of 10 people gathered at the school gate.
"Four remained at the gate while the other six proceeded into the school premises," said Jeevan.
A short while later, the guard saw the same group leaving together.
Jeevan said moments later the guard heard cries and then found the body.
"At this stage, police believe that the incident may to be linked to an attempted murder that took place at the school during August last year," she said.
