Johannesburg - A woman has been arrested for illegally aborting her pregnancy and burying the foetus in Meqheleng in Ficksburg, Free State police said on Thursday.

Police took the 18-year-old teenager into custody on Wednesday after digging up the remains of a foetus from her garden, Captain Phumelele Dhlamini said.

He said officers acted on a tip-off from the residents and interrogated the woman, who led them to the shallow grave.

"She had apparently terminated her pregnancy at four months at the end of November by drinking a traditional medicine."

The teenager was expected to face a charge of concealment of birth in the Ficksburg Magistrate's Court on Friday.
