Johannesburg - A teenager accused of killing a 14-year-old girl will appear in the Witbank Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, Mpumalanga police said.

The youth appeared in court on November 12 and was being kept in a place of safety, Colonel Leonard Hlathi said.

He was arrested last Friday. The 17-year-old teenager, a neighbour of the girl's family, was accused of kidnapping and killing Pretty Ntokozo Mtsweni, who was last seen on October 21 in Tasbet Park, Witbank.

Hlathi said her body was found along the N12. She had been strangled. He said the family had received calls demanding a ransom.

On Friday, the Daily Sun reported that the night Ntokozo disappeared an SMS was sent from her phone demanding R400 000 from her family, and warning her father not to go to the police.

Ntokozo's mother, Hlani, said the boy came to check if the family had found her a week after she disappeared.

"He asked if Ntokozo has been found. I was touched that people in our area felt our pain," she told the newspaper.

Ntokozo's body was found on November 8. The police could not confirm this. Police denied that the girl had been beheaded, as was reported in the Daily Sun.
