Cape Town - An 18-year-old man is missing after his canoe capsized on the Breede River in Witsand, near Mossel Bay in the Western Cape, on Saturday, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

Witsand station commander Attie Gunter said in a statement that on Saturday afternoon the NSRI received reports that three 18-year-old men had been about 26km upstream from the river mouth when their canoe capsized.

Two of the men managed to get to safety, despite the river being swollen from recent rainfall, but the third teenager was missing.

"While the incident happened close to the shore there were reeds in the water along the bank which may have hampered their efforts to get to the shore."

An extensive search was carried out but the missing man could not be found. A police dive unit were continuing the search and an inquest was opened, Gunter said.
