Durban - A 15-year-old girl was raped in the toilets of a high school in Amanzimtoti outside Durban, police said on Wednesday.

"I can confirm that the rape case has been opened. The investigation is still at a very sensitive stage and we will not divulge details," spokesperson Superintendent Buhle Ngidi said.

The girl had been the given necessary medical attention and was professionally counselled after the rape on Tuesday afternoon, he said. No arrests had been made yet.

The crime angered one of the parents at the school who on Wednesday questioned how it was handling the matter.

'Incident being silenced'

"No emergency assembly or notification of learners was carried out. The whole incident is being silenced and this is what absolutely appals me.

"We are constantly bombarded by circulars that at times become a nuisance, and yet the school management does not see fit to alert us that one of our children has been attacked in such a vicious way."

She said steps should have been taken to counsel all the girls.

"Rape is a serious criminal offence punishable by law. Being silent sends out a wrong message that the incident is being condoned."

The school principal declined to comment, saying the matter was being handled by the police.
