Cape Town - A 16-year-old girl is being held in a place of safety after she was rescued by authorities from a 45-year-old man who is accused of kidnapping and raping her.

The teenager from the Eastern Cape was apparently taken from her home in June and married off to the man against her will, The Times reported.

The teen was brought to Dunoon in Cape Town where she was raped repeatedly.

The case is believed to relate to a traditional practice called ukuthwala (forced marriage), which is being clamped down on in the Eastern Cape.

The 16-year-old is from Nqamakwe, near Butterworth.

She managed to draw attention to her plight by convincing her husband that she needed urgent medical attention. At a clinic she told a nurse what had happened to her, and the police were called.

The man was arrested and would soon appear in court.

A government source said the girl could be returned home but it would first be established whether she would be safe there or whether her parents had been involved in the forced marriage.
