Johannesburg - A teenage boy was shot and killed over a cellphone and his friend stabbed in Mthatha, Eastern Cape police said on Wednesday.

"Four high school boys were on their way to a venue to study on Tuesday evening when three men attacked them and robbed them of a cellphone," spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said.

The attackers were armed with a gun and knives.

"The 18-year-old owner of the cellphone died on the scene. His friend was taken to hospital after suffering serious stab wounds."

Two of the boys managed to run away and seek help. No arrests had been made.
