Umtata - Two teenagers who were 17 when they murdered and robbed an Umtata police captain were sentenced on Monday to effective terms of imprisonment matching their ages.
The two, who may not be named as they are still juveniles, were sentenced by Judge P V Ebersohn to 25 years' imprisonment each for the murder. Eight years of each sentence was conditionally suspended.
The pair was sentenced a further 24 years each for robbery and illegally possessing a rifle and ammunition. The sentences will run concurrently.
In terms of prison regulations that allow for parole for good behaviour, this amounts to an effective term of imprisonment of 17 years for each youth.
The two were convicted of the murder of Captain Mhlayifani Baninzi in Dikweni Street, Umtata, in June last year. They also robbed him of R400.
