Johannesburg - Two students were arrested in Cape Town for perjury after they reported a lost cellphone as stolen in an armed robbery, police said on Friday.
Captain FC van Wyk said one of the teenagers opened the case at Table View police station on Monday, in order to claim insurance money.
"She alleged that she was robbed at gunpoint by two unidentified males [last] Friday at 22:30 on Sir Lowry Road, Cape Town."
The woman said she was walking with a friend at the time.
After police questioned the two students, aged 18 and 19, they admitted they had made up the robbery.
"She lost her cellphone at Club Platinum, Short Market Street, Cape Town on Monday... and... wanted her mother to claim another cellphone from their insurance policy," Van Wyk said.
The pair were expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
