Temba robbers on the run
Johannesburg - A gang of armed men was still on the run on Thursday after stealing guns and ammunition from the Temba traffic department, the North West transport MEC's office said.
"The robbers used grinders to open the safe containing firearms and ammunition," said the MEC's spokesperson Matshube Mfoloe.
One of the safes containing a "substantial amount" of money was tampered with but could not be opened.
Between 10 and 12 armed robbers apparently scaled the fence behind the building and broke through the roof by removing some of the tiles, between 00:15 and 04:00 on Wednesday morning.
The three security guards were overpowered and tied up.
The gang stole twelve 9mm hand guns and 192 rounds of ammunition, three R4 and three R5 rifles, and 349 rounds of ammunition. They drove off in a white minibus.
Transport MEC Jerry Thibedi added: "From what we have noticed this was a well-organised and planned robbery by a well-organised group or syndicate. We will follow every possible lead to apprehend them."
