Johannesburg - A couple were arrested for bribery in Tembisa, on the East Rand, Ekurhuleni metro police said on Monday.

Inspector Kobeli Mokheseng said a 48-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman allegedly offered a ward councillor R300 on Thursday in exchange for a vacant site on which to build.

"The councillor notified us and we came prepared," he said.

The couple was arrested in the councillor's office at the Margaret Zuma Community Centre and would appear soon in the Tembisa Magistrate's Court on charges of bribery.

"They are still in custody," he said.
