Tembisa protesters heading to stadium

2011-08-19 11:15
Johannesburg - Hundreds of protesters in Tembisa, near Kempton Park, were being allowed to proceed to the Mehlareng Stadium on Friday even though their march was illegal, Ekurhuleni metro police said.

"The protesters have said they are going to the stadium to speak to their leaders and then they will disperse. So we are giving them the go ahead even though the march is not legal," Inspector Mveli Nhlapo said.

He did not know what they were protesting about.

Earlier, protesters burnt tyres and blocked roads in the area.

Nhlapo said he could not confirm reports that rubber bullets had been fired.

The protesters were intimidating people into staying away from work, he said.

Four schools had been closed as a result of the protest. "Children were told not to go school and the residents did not want the schools opened."
