Johannesburg - Ten people, including a teenager, have appeared in the Makhado Magistrate's Court in Limpopo on charges of illegal hunting, police say.

Bail was denied for the nine men, said spokesperson Ronel Otto.

The minor was released into the custody of his parents and the matter was postponed to December 21.

Sipho Thovhakale, 23, Blondi Zwiitwaho, 29, Justice Mukwevho, 27, Lindelani Nengudza, 20, Azwhihangwisi Radzilani, 25, Godfrey Manganye, 29, Winners Mhongo, 20, Enock Maluleke, 30, Mpho Siebane, 32, and a 16-year-old boy all appeared in court.

Otto said police had discovered the carcasses of seven warthogs, two jackals, an eagle and an aardvark when they pulled over a vehicle outside Makhado early on Tuesday.

The driver was arrested.

"Follow-up investigations led to the arrest of eight other men and the teenager in and around Mpheni village in the Elim district on Tuesday and Wednesday.

"Police are investigating the possibility that the men might be linked to other incidents of illegal hunting," Otto said.
