'Tenants' rob elderly couple

2010-03-12 08:03
Johannesburg - An elderly couple was robbed at gunpoint by men who entered their yard in the pretext of being in search of a room to rent in Tembisa on Thursday evening, Johannesburg police said.

Sergeant Tsholofelo Madumo said two armed men entered the couple's home in Tembisa's Sethuga section at around 19:30 while three other men waited outside in a getaway vehicle.

They found the elderly woman fetching water from an outside tap and asked if she had a room to let.

Children, grandchildren at home

Without waiting for an answer, the men allegedly forced the woman inside the house where her elderly husband, two children and two grandchildren were. The elderly man was sleeping at the time.

The family was then forced into one room while the two men inside their home ransacked it and took their appliances and personal belongings before they fled.

No one was injured during the incident.

A house robbery case has been opened and police are still looking for the robbers.
