Cape Town - The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has raided the Pretoria offices of the Department of Communications as part of its probe into a publicity tender worth R756m, reports the Sunday Independent.

According to the newspaper, the raid took place at 09:30 last Monday and was unannounced. Desktop computers and laptops belonging to the director-general Rosey Sekese, her two deputy directors generals Themba Phiri and Sam Vilakazi as well as other staff members were confiscated.

The newspaper reported that Communications spokesperson Siya Qoza said the minister had requested the SIU proclamation and that they welcome the investigation.

This latest move comes after the new minister Yunus Carrim instituted the SIU investigation after a contract between the department and Media Corner was red-flagged in July last year. It is believed the department has forked out R60m for work that has never been done.

Media Corner was apparently contracted to run a publicity awareness campaign around the department’s digital broadcasting migration plan. The company had been paid a R900 000 retainer every month between October 2012 and November last year but no work has been done.
