Johannesburg - The trial of the blue light driver who allegedly crashed into West Rand teenager Thomas Ferreira has been postponed, Beeld reported on Thursday.

Joseph Motsamai Semitjie appeared in the Krugersdorp Magistrate's court on Wednesday on a charge of reckless driving, but proceedings had to be postponed because there was uncertainty about who would represent him.

In November 2011 he allegedly disregarded a red traffic light while driving former Gauteng local government and housing MEC Humphrey Mmemezi's official vehicle, and crashed into Ferreira's motorcycle.

Semitjie told Magistrate Joachim Nortje that although a lawyer had been appointed for him by the Gauteng local government, he would prefer to retain his own legal representative, Moses Rankoa.

Rankoa indicated he was ready to proceed, but by that stage State prosecutor advocate Micky Thesner had already sent several witnesses home. The trial was postponed until next month.

Ferreira sustained brain injuries, spent three weeks in a coma and is still undergoing intensive rehabilitation therapy.
