Polokwane - Limpopo police have arrested three suspects in connection with the ambush killing of a 52-year-old warrant officer.

On Monday, two police officers attached to the Siloam police station were attacked in Lwamondo while chasing suspected armed robbers.

Warrant Officer Thomas Mabada, 52, was shot at close range.

"The suspects were arrested by a team of detectives and crime intelligence members who were investigating cases of business robberies in the Mogwadi area," police spokesperson Ronel Otto said on Thursday.

She said police followed up on information and traced the suspects to the Thohoyandou area on Wednesday evening.

"The suspects attempted to run away, but they were tracked down and arrested."

The suspects have been linked to house robberies, business robberies and vehicle hijackings in the greater Thohoyandou area.

"Further thorough investigation by a team of detectives then linked the group to the murder of the police member. They are due to appear in court on Friday."

On Tuesday, provincial commissioner General Fannie Masemola visited the family of the slain officer and assured the family that the suspects would be arrested.
