Johannesburg - Three people died in fires on the East Rand on Sunday, emergency officials said.

One man died in the Makuse informal settlement, outside Germiston, when his shack caught alight, said emergency services spokesperson Roggers Mamaila.

"His shack burnt [down] after a primus stove tipped over."

Emergency workers, who were called in just before 05:00, declared him dead at the scene.

In Palm Ridge, Alberton, a person died when their shack burnt down at 03:00, said Mamaila.

"We are not sure whether the victim was male or female," he said. The cause of the blaze was also not known.

In Vosloorus, Boksburg, a man burnt to death when his hostel room caught fire just before 01:00. The cause of the fire was still being investigated, Mamaila said.
