Pietermaritzburg - Three men have been arrested in connection with the murder of Richmond municipal security manager and ANC activist Mthulisi Ngcobo in the town last week.

A squad of police officers arrested the men before sunrise yesterday after an eight-hour hunt through the night.

It is believed the men have links to the Richmond Municipality and council.

Ngcobo, a political activist, Mkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans’ Association official, the Richmond Municipality’s head of security, and the brother of deputy mayor Philile Ngcobo, was gunned down outside his home in the town on Friday last week.

According to Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Mthokozisi Ngobese, Richmond police officers, along with members of the K9 Unit, and Crime Intelligence and Public Order Policing officers, conducted an operation in the area that led to the arrests of the three men.

Arrested on charges of conspiracy to commit murder, they are expected to appear in the Richmond Magistrate’s Court soon.

Umgungundlovu south cluster commander Major-General Lucas Ngobeni applauded the officers for the arrest.

“We will ensure that we thoroughly investigate the case to determine if these suspects can be linked to other criminal cases,” Ngobeni said
