Bloemfontein - Firearms, a nebuliser and watches were among the items Virginia police found stashed in the house of an alleged thief's girlfriend after a tip-off.

Sergeant Mamello Mokhuoane said on Tuesday that two Free State detectives - Constable Zwesandile Thetane and Sergeant Ramonate Phumo - went to the house in the suburb of Meloding on Monday to follow up on information Thetane had received.

His source had told him of a vehicle that had transported a number of household goods to the house.

"He did not waste time but swiftly followed up the information with the assistance of Sergeant Phumo," Mokhuoane said.

A woman was at the house when they got there and after they explained why they were there, she let them search the house.

Items police found and seized included a 12 gauge shotgun, ammunition, four cellphones, six wristwatches, a 107cm TV, a panga, electrical appliances and the nebuliser - a medical home device used to assist with breathing.

She said her boyfriend had brought the goods to the house.

He was not there at the time, but police said they knew who he was as they investigated a case of housebreaking.

The detectives were praised by Thabong cluster commander Major General Lerato Molale for their swift reaction.

"This information is vital in the fight against crime, as it will send a clear message to criminals that community members do not want to share their community with them," said Molale.
