Potchefstroom -Tip-offs from Makouspan villagers resulted in two alleged killers and rapists being arrested while hiding in an abandoned house, North West police said on Tuesday.

They appeared in the Itsoseng Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of killing a 46-year-old man and raping a 32-year-old woman at the Makouspan sports grounds, near Mahikeng, last Thursday.

One man allegedly forced the woman into a nearby shallow hole and raped her. The other man allegedly assaulted the woman’s partner before also raping the woman.

The suspects then ran away. The man died from his injuries. The woman managed to run to the Mooifontein police station.

The two, aged 18 and 25, were arrested in the deserted building the next day after locals pointed out their whereabouts to police.

Acting provincial police commissioner Major General Jacob Tsumane applauded residents for "ensuring that the suspects face the strong arm of the law”.
