Africa prepares for Obama's visit

2013-05-22 11:40

Preparations are underway for US president Barack Obama's trip to Africa next month.WATCH

Cape Town - US President Barack Obama's security team is not taking any chances during his trip to Africa and will even be providing bulletproof trucks.

Obama's visit to Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania would cost between R500m and R900m, the Washington Post has reported.

Obama will spend a night in Dakar, Senegal, two nights in Johannesburg, one in Cape Town and one in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Beeld stated.

At least 445 secret service agents will be accompanying him.

Military freight planes will bring a range of vehicles, including one with state-of-the-art communications systems as well as a truck to scramble radio frequencies in the immediate vicinity of Obama.

There will also be an aircraft carrier stationed near the coast, with a trauma centre, as well as 14 limousines and three trucks with bulletproof glass.

Fighter planes will patrol the air space for 24 hours and will be able to act immediately if necessary.

Obama was planning to go on safari in Tanzania but cancelled the visit to instead go to Robben Island.

It was reported that this could be one of Obama’s most expensive foreign tours.
