Bloemfontein - A Free State toddler has died after her father accidentally reversed over her with his bakkie.

Volksblad reported on Wednesday that Martin Kruger, 35, a farm manager from Dewetsdorp, did not see his daughter Anika follow him outside when he left the house at about 17:00 on Monday to go into town.

"I looked around to see where she was, because I knew she was always outside. I didn't see her so assumed she was watching TV with her sisters."

Kruger had reversed his bakkie about two metres when he heard a "strange noise" and immediately knew something was wrong. He got out and found his youngest daughter lying next to the wheel.

She was rushed to the nearest doctor but was already dead.

"How do you cope? It feels like a part of your life has been taken away. It's a very difficult situation," said Kruger.

He added that he and his wife, Ursula, and their other daughters Alusru, 5, and Anserie, 4, have received a lot of support from friends and family members.

She will be buried on Friday.
