Johannesburg - A 2-year-old boy drowned on Monday when he fell into a swimming pool at his home in Lynnwood, Pretoria, paramedics said.

His parents found him in the pool around 15:00 on Monday, said Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks.

"They rushed him to a nearby doctor where the boy was still critical."

The boy was then taken to hospital, but was declared dead on arrival, Wicks said.

My condolences to the family. Please people fence your pools and make sure the gate cannot be left open. Very few drownings are reported to the papers yet so many drownings happen every year. Child drowning can be prevented by simply taking steps to ensure unattended children cannot gain acess to the pools. And dont for one minute think it wont happen to your child, the parents who have lost kids this way had the same attitude of denial before it happened to them. ( ex crisis worker)

This is so sad. Surely parents know to put fencing around their pool, its like driving a car with a young child standing on the front seat. My condolences to the parents
