Toddler stabbed while mom's at funeral

Cape Town - A man was arrested after he allegedly stabbed his two-year-old niece to death in Nyanga near Philippi, police said on Sunday.

Warrant Officer November Filander said the girl was left in the care of her 12-year-old sister while their mother attended a funeral on Saturday afternoon.

"It's been alleged that... the 38-year-old uncle, who also resides on the same yard, then sent the 12-year-old girl to the shop, while her sister was asleep," he said.

"When she returned, the uncle and the two-year-old girl were missing. When her mother returned... they then forced open the door of the uncle's shack, and found the body of the two-year-old baby girl wrapped in a blanket under a bed."

A blood-stained knife was also found in the shack.

Contrary to earlier reports, November said: "Preliminary investigation indicates that the deceased was not raped and that the cause of death was due to stabbing."

The man is scheduled to appear in the Athlone Magistrate's Court on Monday.
