Pretoria - A woman was killed when she was hit by a train in Edendale, Pietermaritzburg, on Tuesday, paramedics said.
Her 2-year-old child "miraculously escaped with no injuries", said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha.
He said police were investigating how the woman landed in front of the train.
The baby had been taken to a place of safety.
Also on Tuesday, outside Eerste River in Cape Town, a woman and her two children were killed when they stood in front of an oncoming train, Metrorail said.
"They stood right in the middle of the track and we suspect it may have been suicide," regional manager Lindelo Matya said.
"It is suspicious that it happened at 05:00 when it's slightly dark and in an area that people don't normally cross."
He said trains bound for Strand were affected, as they had to be re-routed to one line.
An inquest docket had been opened by the police.
