Durban - The number of people killed in a head-on collision in Tongaat in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday has risen to three, paramedics said.

"One of the critically injured went into cardiac arrest at the scene. Paramedics worked fervently for about 30 minutes to try and resuscitate the 29-year-old man. Despite all their efforts the man was declared dead on scene bringing the death toll to three," said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha.

Two other people were killed and four injured in the head-on collision. Botha said one of the vehicles had burst into flames on impact with two people trapped in the wreckage.

"Tragically they died on scene due to the extensive injuries sustained."

Two others sustained critical injuries while three people were in a serious condition. One of the critically injured later died on the scene.

Botha said the injured were taken to various hospitals in the area.

In a separate accident, 19 people were injured in a collision between two minibus taxis in Somerset Park near Durban, Crisis Medical Paramedics said.

Spokesperson Neil Powell said they sustained various injuries from minor to moderate.

"Once the patients were stabilised, they were loaded into waiting ambulances before being taken to various area hospitals for further treatment."
