Cape Town - Cavendish Square shopping centre in Cape Town was evacuated on Tuesday morning after a fire broke out in a store in the centre.

Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Sharon Bosch told News24 that the sprinkler system extinguished the fire, and there were no reported injuries or fatalities.

A rescue vehicle remained at the scene to ensure the centre was safe.

Cavendish Square was unreachable for comment.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

A number of people tweeted about the evacuation, with speculation that there was a bomb scare or a fire in one of the stores.

- An earlier version of this story stated that the fire broke out at the Pick n Pay supermarket in the mall, based on information obtained from Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service. News24 apologises for the error.

"The fire at Cavendish Centre in Claremont did not break out in the Pick n Pay store, as reported on We would like to advise all of our loyal shoppers that we are open for trade as usual," said David North, Group Strategy and Corporate Affairs Director Pick n Pay.
