Johannesburg - A senior Gauteng police officer was found dead near Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, police said on Tuesday.

"We can confirm a senior officer has been killed," Brigadier Neville Malila said.

"The information at this stage is still sketchy."

He said the officer's vehicle was found abandoned on the R101 near Hammanskraal. His family told investigators he left home to go to work shortly after 14:00 on Monday.

"In the early hours of this morning his body was found in an open veld near Hammanskraal."

He appeared to have died between Monday afternoon and early Tuesday morning.

The officer's name would not be released until his family was notified.
