Top Joburg school probes mock-rape claims

2012-02-06 17:26

Johannesburg - A top Johannesburg Catholic school is probing claims that senior boys made new juniors mock-rape a chair and a bus seat on a school outing, an official said on Monday.

Education spokesperson Charles Phahlane said Education MEC Barbara Creecy phoned the St David's Marist Inanda school on Saturday about the allegation.

"If this is true, it is very serious because it violates the SA Schools Act and the Sexual Offences Act," Phahlane said.

Headmaster Malcolm Williams and chief executive of the school, Mike Greeff, said in a statement that the school board, management and the staff condemned conduct that intimidated, humiliated or frightened anyone.

"We are shocked and disappointed that any of our boys would be involved in behaviour which may cause distress or humiliation," they said.

Such behaviour was a violation of the school's code of conduct and anti-bullying policy.

"Our primary concern at this time is for the Grade 8s who have been affected."

The school had a counselling programme for boys and their families and would be working with those involved.

"We express our sincerest apologies to the boys and their families for the violation of trust that has occurred and we commit to doing all that is necessary to heal these wounds."

Now they want to kill our schools......

      Thabo - 2012-02-06 18:07

What are you talking about? Who wants to kill the schools? Or do just hammer away at a keyboard because you happen to have one?

      werner.smidt - 2012-02-07 06:21

He hammers away, because he was told to do so by a senior :)

  • bradley.mills2 - 2012-02-06 17:58

I'm an old boy from that school and I think what the senior boys did is unacceptable. We would never have done anything like that when I was a senior... The boys who made those grade 8's do that don't belong in St David's, they are not true Marist boys...

      Thabo - 2012-02-06 18:04

Don't believe a word of this. This is sensationalist reporting at its best! This isn't a school for hooligans. If I were the school I would sue this reporter.

      Robby - 2012-02-06 18:23

@Thabo. I am with you on this. This is a disgrace to twist this initiation act into an act of rape. We know what this act is, and it has nothing to do with rape.

  • Thabo - 2012-02-06 18:01

I have never read such rubbish in my life. We all went through this initiation. How do you mock rape a chair? How was rape brought into this? This is scandalous reporting to say the least. This is an excellent school and nobody has ever raped anybody there or pretended to rape. They should sue this reporter!!

      Vusi - 2012-02-06 18:33

      Gutter Reporting.

      pierre.w.brouard - 2012-02-06 19:01

Thabo, just because you "survived" initiation doesn't make it right. Initiations like this breed men who think violence and humiliation is ok, it does not build "character". We need different kinds of men in a South Africa which already has horrifically high levels of violence between men (on a news report today - South Africans are more likely to die of murder than in a car accident), towards women, and towards anyone who does not conform to, or prop up, an aggressive heterosexual masculinity. I praise the school for condemning violence and seeking the truth of what happened. This is an opportunity to reflect.

      Thabo - 2012-02-06 20:07

@Pierre. We are talking about a private school in Sandton. Nobody is teaching anybody to rape girls. You seem to think this a missionary school stuck somewhere in the bushes.

      Vusi - 2012-02-06 20:50

@Thabo. I can't get hold of you on your phone, Get off here and let the St David's guys defend their own honour. There is a huge war going on in the dining hall. Come I need you. The YL guys are like wild animals tonight. Come help this is going to be a bloody night.

      Steve - 2012-02-06 22:13

Has anybody asked whether it was a consenting chair...?

      methedex - 2012-02-07 07:25

Thabo is right. Stop being pansies and take the initiation head on. Focus on drugs in school, not initiation problems.

  • JohncarlosBiza - 2012-02-06 18:05

This is a little petty. At most, it should be dealt with internally by the school

  • Wynand - 2012-02-06 18:18

Ag Shame! Just get ur panties out of a knot!!

  • Aaron - 2012-02-06 18:28

Seedy journalism. Why bring "rape" into it, if not only to make it more sensationalist? Schoolboys horsing around dry humping a chair is neither news nor worthy of national angst and hand wringing. Come off it. The country is slowly descending into the same pit that is the rest of Africa and here we are getting all upset about a few schoolboy antics. Get real.

      maseratifittipaldi - 2012-02-06 21:57

My thoughts exactly, Aaron. This most likely was lovemaking between willing and consenting participants. Not rape. I heard the other day that some bigwig politician was making love to the chair of the portfolio committee on gender equality.

      Thabo - 2012-02-06 22:52

Mr Viglietti, you have a wild sense of humour! HA HA HA

  • Diran - 2012-02-06 18:29

Measure the entire length of a rugby field with a single match stick. Now that’s torture lol

  • Diran - 2012-02-06 18:37

According to a News 24 Reporter, it's possible to mock rape a bus chair. Maybe the bus chair should file a rape charge lol

  • maseratifittipaldi - 2012-02-06 21:44

Typical. The perpetrators get sympathy and counselling, but the victims are simply ignored. Not only must the poor chair and bus seat be subjected to the humiliation of supporting a lot of are soles as a matter of course, but they now they are subjected to rape as well. No wonder some individuals revert to extreme behaviour-like that chair who collapsed under the fat are sole live on TV some time ago. There should be more demonstrations like this.

  • Willem - 2012-02-06 22:00

Sounds like the good old "olie boor".

  • ivan.coetzee2 - 2012-02-06 22:28

Probably some little "mommy's boy", who went crying to momsy! Get a life mom, your boy will probably turn out to be the kind of "mommys little boy", u always wanted, weak, very weak with know spine, so he can bend forwards and backwards with ease!

      Thabo - 2012-02-06 22:49

HA HA HA. You hit the nail on the head Ivan.

  • Scouter - 2012-02-07 02:39

Pity the victim wasn't a 'Lazy-Boy' recliner - that would have made the story far more punnable.

  • Silvana - 2012-02-07 05:46

It will be interesting to see what action is taken against the "bullies".

  • grantybobbins - 2012-02-07 07:28

Everyone who has been to a school with sports commaradery and a strong brotherhood will know initiation is part of being at school and it is how you become part of a team and it really isnt that bad at all!! you actually feel more part of the team once you have completed inititaion. It takes one or two peopel like this to spoil eveything but "Tittle Taling" to the teachers!!!

  • Cary - 2012-02-07 07:44

Absolute Joke!! It was harmless initiation and sensationalist journalism has blown this way out of proportion. Both my boys are at St Davids (Grade 4 and 9) and this is now way out of hand because an over protective mother/father has taken exception.

  • Susan - 2012-02-07 08:21

FAKE RAPE A CHAIR !!NOW I'VE HEARD IT ALL!!

  • Harald - 2012-02-07 09:15

oh please.... mock rape?? Mock sex... yes! Big deal; we all went through that... What a bunch of pansies... what you think kids talk about? They no angels, nor were we!

  • Buck - 2012-02-07 09:34

Rubbish report. How is dry humping an inanimate object mock rape? how exactly will the mock rape progress to actual rape of the seat?

  • zanelet - 2012-02-21 19:58

I just hope that all the bus seats will be taken in for counselling! I can imagine the trauma of witnessing your peer getting raped!
