Johannesburg - Johannesburg Assistant Commissioner Oswald Reddy on Sunday expressed his disappointment at the behaviour of the people who allegedly assisted a robber escaping the scene of his crime.
The incident followed an armed robbery by three men in Johannesburg's central business district on Saturday.
Captain Mashadi Selepe said police were doing a routine patrol of the area when they received a complaint of the robbery.
"Police arrived at the scene and apprehended two of the robbers. The third robber managed to flee.
"Police then locked the two robbers in their service vehicle and pursued the third robber."
Selepe said that during the time police left their vehicle unattended, bystanders broke open the door.
As a result, one of the robbers managed to escape, she said.
He has not yet been re-arrested, Selepe said.
The third robber was, however, captured.
