Pretoria - Four men accused of killing former Johannesburg cluster commander Major General Tirhani Maswanganyi should be examined by doctors, their lawyer said on Friday.

Tshepo Mosai, 30, Roger Godfrey Moseki, 33, Ndaedzo Isaac Vele, 29 and Nditsheni Daniel Nefolovhodwe, 32, are charged with premeditated murder.

The men's request to see doctors halted their bail proceedings in the Pretoria North Magistrate's Court on Friday, shortly after the matter started around midday.

A lawyer told the court that even after requesting medical attention on Monday, the four were not treated.

The four alleged that police assaulted them after their arrest.

Prosecutor Lucas Moseki was instructed by the court to find out why the men had not received treatment.

The bail application would resume later on Friday, after an adjournment.

The four entered the packed courtroom before midday.

Several reporters and photographers were in court.

Maswanganyi's widow Shereen was in court with her daughter Tinyiko, 17.

They were accompanied by Shereen's close friend Kate Malapane.

Maswanganyi was found dead in a field near Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, with his hands and feet tied, on 17 June.

A search was launched after a police patrol found his Isuzu bakkie abandoned next to the R101.

A police uniform and police identification card were in the bakkie.
