Johannesburg - Gauteng’s deputy police commissioner for visible policing Major-General Phumzo Gela allegedly believes himself above the law and has been quoted in a report as refusing to respond to various allegations saying he is too senior to be subjected to processes.

According to the Sunday Independent, Gela was accused of insulting and demeaning his juniors and verbally transferring them without following procedure. Two unions investigated the allegations and issued a report with recommendations in March 2012.

According to the 80-page report, Gela was asked by the task team to give his version of events. In response he said a person of his stature, rank and qualification will not subject himself to the process.

Two unions involved in the investigation say that since the report’s release almost two years ago, Gela has escaped any form of questioning and that he has been left untouched. Gela also failed to respond to calls and SMSes by the newspaper this week.
