Top property agent nabbed for rhino horns

2012-07-25 10:06

Bloemfontein - A well known property agent from Bethlehem, her husband and another woman were arrested for illegal trading in rhino horns, Volksblad reported on Wednesday.

The 61-year-old agent and the woman, 58, were arrested after they were caught in a police trap after months of investigation, the paper reported.

The agent and her 57-year-old husband stayed on a farm in Fouriesburg, which was managed by the husband.

A police dog was used to find the four rhino horns in the farmhouse.

The couple and the woman were in custody and held by police in Bethlehem.

They were expected to appear in the Bethlehem Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

    Disgusting!

      Walter - 2012-07-25 10:42

I agree Gavin; it's disgusting and they should receive no mercy because of their age. Nail them and confiscate everything they own. Oh, and another thing, Gavin.... just ignore the silly little comment to your remark. It doesn't deserve a response.

      Squeegee - 2012-07-25 10:59

See how many of those wealthy people are now being exposed ... very often it is from ill-gotten gains. Sad that our heritage had to suffer for their greed!!!

Rhino poaching is serious in Mzantsi and I'm sure our government is benefiting in this scheme, nowonder he tend to ignore what is happening. These guys needs to serve minimum 15 years for each horn is found on them.

Give us names!!! So we can shame their entire family.

      Beertjie Peertjie - 2012-07-25 10:55

Jeez Richard. Entire family? You must be absolutely 100% sure that your entire family are absolute angels. Imagine your cousin does something bad. Should you be shamed? Just wondering. Nevertheless, the individuals must be nailed.

      crazyjourno - 2012-07-25 14:45

They will only name them, once they have made their first court appearance. 'Cos, if they name them before hand, and they are found not-guilty, then the accused can sue news 24...

  • riaan.schalkwyk.5 - 2012-07-25 10:45

Greed greed and some more greed. I thought estate agents earned allot of money? SA is a criminal haven, is there any decent people left in this hell-hole-country?

  • natasha.wentink - 2012-07-25 11:02

Keep the arrests coming! With the death toll currently sitting at almost 300 this year alone (that we know of) we need to let these greedy disgusting excuses for humanity know that they will be caught!!!!

  • teddy.beer.319 - 2012-07-25 11:10

Of late, I am beginning to think that the biggest poaching culprits are some of our farmers. Too many reports linking this crime to them.

      natasha.wentink - 2012-07-25 11:25

You do have a point - and also a lot of vets are involved. It's disgusting!

  • warren.carne.9 - 2012-07-25 11:24

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-07-25 11:36

Lock them up, confiscate everything they have and never let them out again. We keep thinking poachers come into this country to kill our rhinos and in the meantime the crooks are right under our noses. Disgusting people.

  • hendriek.woede - 2012-07-25 11:56

Are they minors? why their names are not mentioned? Or I know why?

      crazyjourno - 2012-07-25 14:48

Media can only name the accused once they have made their first court appearances and once they are formally charged.Otherwise news24 can be sued on grounds of defamation if the accused are named beforehand and founf NOT-GUILTY. It is how court procedures work...

  • chris.flack.750 - 2012-07-25 12:18

For every Rhino killed in Africa, we should kill one of the Chinese Panda Bears. Maybe then they would think twice.

      crazyjourno - 2012-07-25 14:49

Haai Shyme, the poor Pandas... lol What are we selling them for? Their skin??

      dorotheadoshdot.arthur - 2012-07-25 15:32

Then we put ourselves on their level and what is the difference between a Rhino and a Panda?? 2 Wrongs do not make a right!

  • leon.marais.71 - 2012-07-25 15:01

Lock them up with the other poachers and throw away the keys...

  • gillian.sanderson - 2012-07-25 15:11

Lock them up and throw away the key!

  • Thobile Lugwadu - 2012-07-26 08:47

These are criminals and for once no body is accusing the ANC. This is a crime of greed. The perpetrators are not driven by hunger, but by greed for more money...unintended consequence of a capitalist economy(not supporting communism either). Chineese have borne the brunt of having to blame for all rhino-horn poaching crimes. I wonder how many of them actually own farms in free state and if the uneducated blacks assisted them.
