Johannesburg - A team of top detectives have been appointed to search for an apparent serial rapist and killer after four murders in Tshwane, national police commissioner General Riah Phiyega said on Sunday.

"With the experience that this team has acquired over the years, I am confident that we have selected the right people for this massive task," Phiyega said in a statement.

The team was established after 14 murder dockets, from Sunnyside, Villeria and Mamelodi, showed the same modus operandi.

In four of these cases, where young women were killed using the same method, forensic evidence detected the DNA of the same man. The detectives were still screening other cases to determine whether there were links to the suspected serial murders.

The team included members from the family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit, crime intelligence, forensic services DNA analysts and a psychological profiler.
