Torched CT trains a R12m setback

2012-03-20 21:24

Johannesburg - Three train coaches were set on fire in Khayelitsha, Cape Town on Tuesday, causing damage of about R12m, Metrorail said.

"Preliminary investigations suggest that arson may have been the cause of the fire," said Western Cape regional manager Mthuthuzeli Swartz.

Trains on the Khayelitsha-Philippi line were delayed. The fire had been extinguished and train services restored.

Swartz appealed to the public to come forward with information on anyone involved in the vandalising and torching of trains.

"A reward of up to R25 000 may be paid for information leading to a successful conviction," he said.

Godfrey you just dont know how right you are.One thing the cANCer are good at is destabilising and making an area ungovernable then taking over. that is the easy part for them its what they do and have done for decades. sadly that's all they are good at. developing things there after is another thing. Something they did not learn about when they were all studying in communist Russia

These are the actions of uncivilized zombie barbarians. Build them schools, universities, trains or anything that can improve their lives and as true as bob, they will be sure to destroy it.

and now those who had jobs can't get there... but it's not their fault their communities are poor....Shame...

  • phathuchicos - 2012-03-20 21:39

they should just suspend service to khayelitsha then people will realise how important subsidised trains are in their daily lives when they are paying an arm and leg for old skorokoro crammed minibuses...

      Buyisile Mabuya Nomana - 2012-03-20 22:25

I can't believe that everyday the trains from Khayelitsha to Cape Town always delay let alone being set alight by perpetrators who probably don't even take a train to work I think I'd rather risk my life take skorokoro minibus to work that take train and be late always.Remember that not all of us in K'ltsha are dumb asses!!!

      Stirer - 2012-03-21 08:26

Buyisile, have you stopped to wonder what the underlying cause of the train delays are? - or do you think its a deliberate play by some third party to make everyone late for work. And please explain to everyone here, just how burning the train is suddenly going to improve the service?

That money couldve been spent on building a school, or employing 10 good teachers for 5 years.\r\n\r\nWell done, keep yourselves back from prospering.

12m - that's just this week. That's a lot of houses, schools and overall infrastructure that in other parts people are burning, stoning and generally destroying other things because they don't have them! People pushed too far - probably. Most of the posters on N24 simply do not 'get' this behaviour. The frustrations, angers, resentment, yes. The way it gets addressed, no. Burning, looting, stoning, blocking roadsis so '80's. Made great headlines back then as it does now. With one fundamental difference - national, public sympathy is no longer with you. Internationally even less so. Everyone's tired and worn out. Find a new way

The hair is too short to figure out what is good for them. A lot of vandalistic kleptomaniacs, they steal everything that they break.

I think it's time to invest heavily in CCTV so that these mindless criminals can be deterred and also brought to justice

  • LandyNut - 2012-03-21 08:19

These dumb asses shoot themselves in the foot everytime. If the train is late for some reason, riot, break everyhing and the burn it. Tomorrow the same dumb asses will be standing waiting at the station for the train to take them to work, forgetting yesterday they destroyed it. So the circle of violence starts again.

I think Metrorail should reinstate a rail way police/security, have at least a ratio of 1 person: 2 coaches and have guards look after the coaches while in the yard. By securing the safety of the commuters there will be less grievances due to family members being killed, hurt and robbed on the trains. If Metrorail don't pull up their socks and the MyCity Buses proves successful and the City starts to implement the program in more areas they will surely lose customers.
