Traffic cop shooting: Suspect held

Cape Town - Western Cape police said on Thursday that a suspect was arrested in connection with the murders of a Cape Town traffic officer and a motorist.

Police said in a statement that a 26 year old suspect from Parkwood Estate was arrested, and two firearms were also seized.

The suspect is due to appear in the Wynberg Magistrates Court on Friday where he faces two murder charges.

On Wednesday, two men had approached the driver of a Toyota Corolla on Prince George drive, in Lavender Hill, Cape around 09:00, while he was being issued with a traffic fine.

The driver was shot and died on the scene. Wesley Woodman, the 35-year-old traffic officer who stopped the car, was rushed to hospital. He died later on Wednesday.

Woodman was a senior traffic officer with 14 years of experience. His service firearm was stolen in the attack.

Police said one of the firearms seized during the supect's arrest been positively identified as that belonging to Woodman.
